I have never had the chance to visit Italy. Maybe one day, I get that opportunity, but for now, I must make the best of my Italy here in the states. I love pasta and a good sauce. However, after realizing that my body rejects onions, I have not found a good tomato sauce that could bring me intense flavor and excitement without the pain. I have been on a quest to find that. In the mean time, I have created a pasta sauce that works really well for those like me, who can not have onions or onion powder in their food. This recipe does include a unique ingredient: Oregano Essential Oil.

Most will say that you can not cook with essential oils, I would agree with them, if the oils are not a brand of essential oils that designates that the oil can be ingested. Please be sure to read your labels on your essential oils, not all are created equal.

This is simply a recipe that I have chosen to make using oregano essential oil. It provides the taste I was looking for. If you do not have this oil, you can shop my site located in the sidebar or choose to put fresh/dried oregano in its place. This is your choice.

When using oregano essential oil, use it with caution. This is known to most as a “hot” oil. Imagine putting a jalapeno in your mouth. The oil that is left from that pepper is hot. There is usually not an easy way to get that hot out. This is the same for oregano.  Oregano needs a carrier oil to bind to, that is why you will notice olive oil mixed in this sauce will act as that for the oregano in this recipe.

Oregano Spaghetti Sauce

This is a tomato based sauce that uses oregano essential oil in it. Please use extreme caution when using oregano essential. It is a very powerful oil. Be sure to only use essential oil that has been approved for internal use and only use the amount mentioned in the recipe.

  • 1 12 oz can tomato sauce
  • 1 cup grape gomatoes sliced
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1 drop oregano essential oil Use with caution, no more than 1 drop
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 sprig cilantro fresh

Instructions

  • 1) Pour 12oz can of tomato sauce into medium sized pan and place on stove, low-med heat.
  • 2) Place sliced tomatoes in 1 tablespoon of olive oil in large pan. Add spices.
  • 3) Saute the tomatoes until they are soft and lightly brown.
  • 4) Add tomatoes and spices to the pot of tomato sauce.
  • 5) Put 1/2 cup olive oil into the tomato sauce mixture. This is important as it is a carrier oil for the oregano.
  • 6) After bringing the sauce to a slight boil, remove from the heat and add 1 drop of oregano. Mix really well.
  • 7) Serve over pasta of choice. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves.

Notes

*Use Caution When Using Oregano Essential Oil*
Keep in mind that when stirring your sauce that you use a metal spoon or teflon spoon. Wood will soak the oregano oil into it and the wooden spoon may pass it to another future recipe (which may not be tasty in that dish.) This is provided that you do not wash your wooden spoons in the dishwasher.
If you find that it is "hot" put more olive oil in it to balance the heat.
